Juba, July 20, 2026 (SSNA) — The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting transitional justice and international criminal justice efforts in South Sudan.
Speaking at the commemoration of the International Day of International Criminal Justice in Juba on Friday, EU Charge d’Affaires Lothar Jaschke said the bloc remains committed to strengthening South Sudan’s justice sector by promoting an independent, impartial, and accessible legal system.
Jaschke said the EU is supporting a three-year regional programme worth about $6 million to help implement the African Union’s Transitional Justice Policy, including support for victims’ groups and youth participation through digital storytelling. He also highlighted a €21 million global initiative launched in 2024 to combat impunity for international crimes and reinforce support for the International Criminal Court (ICC).
He reiterated the EU’s commitment to the Rome Statute and the ICC, stressing that accountability, the rule of law, and support for civil society, legal professionals, and human rights defenders remain central to advancing justice for victims of serious crimes.
